What is accent modification?
Our accents come from the sounds and patterns of our native language. Changing an accent entails working with the individual sounds that make up words, the stress patterns in words, and the intonation of phrases and sentences. Through repeated practice, we can override old patterns and implement our new voices in everyday conversations.
Accents can affect our ability to relay a message and our ability to speak confidently. On the other hand, accents are intertwined with our cultural identity. The goal of accent modification is not to eliminate the accent, but to provide the tools to achieve effective communication.
Meet Melissa
Hello and welcome to Accent Aid Online. I'm Melissa, a certified speech-language pathologist in the state of Texas. By day, I am a pediatric therapist working with children and their families in the home. I'm a lover of languages and speak English, Spanish, conversational French, and a bit of Portuguese. I reside in Austin with my many plants, and enjoy live music, art, and lounging on patios.
As a learner of foreign languages, I understand firsthand how difficult pronunciation can be. I use personal experience as well as evidence-based techniques to provide clients with an array of tools to change their accents and thereby become confident speakers.
